A rare and large 18th Century Tibetan Buddhist Chöd damaru hand drum with painted skulls and garlands on a brilliant red ground. Both woven strikers present. Fabric covered leather central band with two thokcha \"sky-iron\" amulets and one brass button. Very long multi-colored silk (backed with cotton) brocadetail withtassels,4 locks of human hair (most likely fromcherished teachers - obviously very special), a short strip of animal hide with fur,and a brass bell.Interestingly, I also discoveredan image of a severed human hand, drawn on an interior panel of the tassel. A string of 5 beads, a metal ring, and another interesting swiveling metal clasp connect the tail to the handle. Yin and Yang symbols are painted on each hide surface.
Very good condition for its age. Very minor paint loss. One old repair to the wooden body, a filled and repainted crack. A little lifting on one hide cover
