RARE Pair Ornate Gold Chalkware Victorian Portraits European Contessa (D\'Orsa) Description
Pair Large Ornate Gold Chalkware Victorian Portraits - European Contessas
A spectacular pair of chalkware frames with ornate gold gilded floral scrolls and details with minimal scratches and knicks. I believe these to be of Italian origin.
The one with the red drape in the background, bears the sticker which says :
BK-187 M-2 #228A Countess DeOrsa (sometimes referred to as Contessa D\'Orsa and sometimes mis-spelled D\'Orsay followed by another series of numbers beginning with A767 and a bunch of 7\'s. Indescernable.
The other portrait does not have any sticker so I do not know who it portrays, nor do Isee any artists signing on either piece. I believe these to be prints attached to the ornate oval chalkware frames.
These both have hook and eye type hanging devices which are attached to the very top fastened into the chalkware, however,I have displayed them on ornate easels (which are NOT included in the sale).
They are heavy weighing over 5 lbs. each, and measure 15\" high by 13\" wide and have a thickness of 1.5\"
Unknown origin or age. One has sticker but does not have country which I believe to be Italy. Some chips on front of one, very minimal-see photos. Numerous specks of missing gold on the front of both. One has a sizeable chip at the hook insertion on the top of the frame. The print with the pale blue background has an air pocket on the lower left area, and another may be beginning in the upper area. May have peeled up and been re-attached, as there is a minor 1\" long tear around 5 o\'clock. THERE IS NO GLASS, just a glaze over the prints which are attached to the chalkware frames in the oval center.
Estimating circa 50\'s or 60\'s.
I may consider selling separately if given an urgent request and reasonable offer.
These will most likely be packaged and shipped by UPS Professionals.
