RARE \'Ship of the line\' Antique MATCH/SPILL POT Barrel TIMBERS \'H.M.S.Spartiate\':
$104.92

ATTIC CLEAROUT;

I\'m having an absolute clearout of my attic and finally selling my family\'s collectables;(sadly another relative passed away at Christmas and hence the current round of listings...Happy hunting!

You are offerding for my Grandfather\'s and subsequently my Aunt\'s INCREDIBLE and HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER Piece of Maritime Naval history.

You are offerding for a piece of turned Teak, worked into the form of a Barrel for holding Matches or spills.

Turned and given a dedication plaque,any time from 1857 to 1930...(That is of no real importance).

Assuming the dedication is accurate,( and I have seen and owned a number of these barrels for various ships,so believe them to be true), then this is a MATCH OR SPILL BARREL SHAPED POT OR HOLDER MADE FROM THE TEAK TIMBERS OF THE British 74 gun \'Ship of the line\' H.M.S Spartiate.

For the uninitiated this is an 18thC made, French 74 gun man-o-war or ship of the line, built in 1798 and launched under the name Sparti. In 1798 she took part in the Battle of the Nile where she became one of the nine ships captured by the Royal Navy. She was then renamed H.M.S.Spartiate. In 1805 HMS Spartiate fought at the Battle of Trafalgar under Francis Laforey and ultimately Lord Nelson!!.

The process of her breaking was completed by May 1857.

THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE CHANCE TO OWN A PART OF A ROYAL NAVY 18/19thC SHIP OF THE LINE that was actually engaged in Battle at the Nile and at Trafalgar!!!

I have owned a number of these Barrels before, my Grandfather tried to collect \'Ship of the line\' memorabilia.

Please note that there is almost always a more recent ship with the same name as that of the name denoted on the Barrel, but my experience of these is that the later ships are predominantly metal constructs with limited wood in the interior, and these Barrels are made from thick ships timbers of 18/19thC ships of the line.You also have to ask yourself whether a late 19thC Victorian Woodworker or early 20thC carpenter, who turned the timber into the barrel, would essentially be using his Granny\'s table leg to con you.

Well I take a view that for a start these timbers where not rare in those days, there would have been a lot of them about. These where produced in numbers and there would have been no shortage of teak to have driven the need for forgeries. I also believe that the market was healthy for these match spill pot barrels and that the various ships of the line broken up to effectively build them where in plentiful supply at that time...All the Barrels I have seen, and we did at one point have seven or eight ,have only related to ships from the 18/19thC even where there was a later named vessel with same denomination. In other words you never find a Barrel from a warship or destroyer or the like that didn\'t have an earlier 18/19thC predessesor

I am certain this is an ORIGINAL 18th-19thC piece of thick Teak timber from the aforesaid H.M.S.Spartiate, and as such this is an INCREDIBLY SPINE TINGLING PIECE OF ROYAL NAVAL MEMORABILIA...AN ACTUAL SHIP OF THE LINE OF THE ROYAL NAVY, BUT NOT SOME THIRD CLASS SHIP, A FRENCH PRIZE, RENAMED AND PLAYING AN IMPORTANT PART AT THE MOST FAMOUS OF ALL NAVAL BATTLES, TRAFALGAR, THE NEMESIS OF ADMIRAL HORATIO NELSON....Perhaps it\'s me, or maybe a man thing but...well WOW and double WOW.

For condition SEE PHOTOS AND please read the section \'SELLERS NOTES\' for a full accurate appraisal of the items condition.Undamaged

The Spill-Match pot measures 8.5 cm tall x 7cm wide roughly, approx
