RARE VICTORIAN BURR WALNUT TANTALUS CHAPMAN SON & CO LONDON CUT CRYSTAL:

DESCRIPTION - For sale is a very rare and fine 19th Century Tantalus manufactured by Chapman Son & Co of London.

The Tantalus is cube form with beveled glass to the top and all four sides with burr walnut frame.

The front of the cabinet has a drop fall door with Bramah lock. The door falls flat to open to a satin wood lined interior. The interior of the fall door and the base have brass runners.

Inside is a burr walnut square tray with flush brass swing handles and four compartments all on brass wheels which run in the tracks to the base and fall front.

The tray can also be wheeled up and down the table to serve the guests.

Each compartment is velvet lined and fitted with four cut glass decanters. The decanters are two large and two small. The two large are engraved to the rim, Brandy and Gin. The two small are not engraved. All the bottles are hobnail cut with lapidary stoppers.

MARKS - The interior of the fall front has an engraved brass plaque with the name Chapman Son & Co London.

The lock is also fully stamped.

SIZE - The case measures 32cm tall by 26.5cm wide and 26.5cm deep.

CONDITION - Overall in very good order with minor age related wear to the outer case, faint cracks to the burr walnut veneer on corner joints and some minor scuffs.

Glass panels all in perfect order

Tray - Again some minor stress cracks to the veneer. Wear to the original velvet linings.

Two bottles are slightly smaller and could be later replacements however they match in terms of cut and design.

DETAILS - A family piece owned for over 30 years. An absolute Rolls Royce of a tantalus and a very rare item.
