1938house Store RARE VINTAGE 1940s BABY BLUE NYLON FULL SLIP/PETTICOAT by VANITY FAIR Sz 34 NWT Early afternoon on a budget airline flight, and the cabin attendant asks the elderly passenger would he like lunch. This particular passenger, being a stranger to all this new-fangled stuff like jet airliners and budget flights, responds by enthusiastically asking what the choice is. The answer is . . . “well, yes or no, really.” Thus we draw your attention to the real world out there when, today, $22 buys you a ‘Women\'s Rosette Lace Full Slip 26 Inch’ in a choice . . . of “well, black or white, really.” Allow us to rewind the clock to the days when Vanity Fair’s offerings were the loveliest, daintiest, strongest, most practical (it says on the tag) underfashions in nylon tricot. Powder blue nylon tricot of a lovely, dainty (oh, we’ve done that) underfashion that is certainly not available for twenty-two bucks. $7.95 at the time but there was no time like the present, except the present is now the past and you missed out – mostly because you hadn’t been born. Seventy years ago, which is why it’s a well below the knee 36” long. Not only is today’s offering lacklustre, they can’t even be bothered to show you how it might look when being worn. The website’s “quick view” should be just that, enough time for you to say thank you but no thank you. Uninspiring . . . and that’s being polite. But you get lace and that’s more than can be said for ours. Ours, that could be yours, has nothing at all that might be described as pandering to female taste, not even in 1945. Seventy years old and brand new, got that? Okay, it is lovely baby blue tricot and it’s kinda woman-shaped up top but, instead of lace, there’s mesh. Piping-edged above and below around the bodice but double thickness around the hemline. All hanging from satin straps that can be adjusted, at long last, to suit your needs by means of those enamelled metal sliders. Being New Old Stock, we can’t wash the six little marks out. It will be for you to . . . “wash this exquisite nylon tricot lingerie just as you do nylon stockings.” And hang it up over the shower curtain rail, with your stockings “because of the Vanity Fair Vanitset Process it will dry quickly and look like new without pressing.” Look like new? Er, excuse me – it IS new! (If you can call something new when it’s seventy years old, that is.)
Welcome to our Slip Department, featuring what we hope is an interesting and tempting collection of pretty items from a varied assortment of manufacturers. As you would expect, our items normally include all the regular names but we have done our best to bring you also a selection of brands with which you might not be familiar. We do realise that slips seem to be quite collectable, so there should always be something in our little store that might tempt you. Unless stated as New with or without tags (NWT or NWOT), all are sold as being in excellent used condition: free of damage, holes, tears and stains, except where specifically stated otherwise. Regrettably, we are no longer able to accept customers from Italy. Problems, of non-arriving purchases mean our lords and masters ensure it is we who lose the item and the income (while they still pocket their profits).
