Up for sale today is a large 1 Liter, rare, vintage German beer stein purchased in 1970 by my stepfather when he was in Germany. The hand painted stein contains the portrait of an \"abschied\" Tyrolean couple saying goodbye to each other. The saying \"Morgen muss ich fort von hier und muss Abschied nehmen\" is inscribed at the bottom of the stein. It translates to, \"Tomorrow, I have to go out of here and leave you farewell. Willkommen und Abschied is a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe from the collection Sesenheimer Lieder (de) about the daughter of a parson. The couple depicted here look like the parting may be caused by war or some unforeseen circumstance. The salt-glazed, cobalt blue background provides a nice contrast to the colors of the beautiful mountain village; complete with a church.The number 70 is etched into the stein behind the handle. I am not sure if this is a limited edition number or a mold number. The detailing in this piece is outstanding. Great condition for it\'s age with no chips or cracks. There is some minor discoloration of paint on the stein and bottom of the base from age and normal age and wear to the pewter lid. Measures:11 1/2 inches tall
12 inch base diameterThe base shows an gold-leafed \"Cremer\" hallmark and the number \"107\", incised \"1L\" and a possible signature and other details that I cannot make out. The pewter has a stamp at the bottom as well. Thanks for looking!
