A rarer I have been told - Royal Navy Long Service Medal to a sailor with the appointment of 2nd Captain Of The Main Top at the very tough and notorius RN training facility H.M.S. EXCELLENT.
I have been told that this title was an appointment not a substantive rank and medals to H.M.S. EXCELLENT are not too common from the Victorian era.Medals are not my field of knowledge so while I can see no damage such as dings or knocks please examine the photos closeup yourself to see the condition. It has nice age tone and patina overall and does not looked to have been cleaned. Not sure how your medal guys grade medals so am using photos to do this.
The medal has not been erased/renamed and is impressed and named to: Wm. DROVER 2nd C.M. Top H.M.S. Excellent
The medal ribbon is a modern replacement but correct for display.
From the British Archives I obtained photocopies of the records they have for Wm. Drover - and from what I can determine it looks like he was born in 1848 and enlisted in the Royal Navy in 1868 and re-engaged in 1878 for a further 10 years of service. The re-engagement document shows him serving as 2nd Captain Main on board HMS Excellent as of February 1878.
From what I can see he served on 14 various ships and establishments during his career. I will include what copies of documents I obtained from the Archives to allow someone with far more knowledge of Royal Navy service records and medal research than I have to fully research DROVER. (I believe he obtained the rank of CPO during his career).
A really nice example of this attractive and from I have been told very difficult to qualify for - Victorian Royal Navy Long Service Medal.
