This is a typed letter on personal letterhead dated May 30, 1993 and is signed Richard J. McDonald in blue ink.The letter says as follows: "Dear Mashihiro: / Many thanks for your very nice letter. In regard to the founding / of McDonald's, your real father is correct. / My brother and I founded McDonald's in 1940. This was in San / Bernardino, California. We never even met Ray Kroc until 1954. / We conceived the idea of what is now called "fast food" in 1948. / In 1953, my brother and I began a franchise program of McDonald's. / Our first franchise agent was a man named William Tansey. We opened / 9 McDonald's in 1953 but Mr. Tansey became ill and had to withdraw / from the franchised program. / Mr. Ray Kroc, who had been selling us milk shake machines, applied / for the position of franchise agent and we hired him in 1955. / Please tell your father I want to congratulate him for knowing who / really founded McDonald's. I am a little surprised that your host / father did not wonder why the chain of restaurants is called / McDonald's if the founder was Ray Kroc. / I am a little proud that I was the one who conceived and designed the / so called "Golden Arches." / Again, Mashihiro, many thanks for your letter and I hope that someday / we may meet. The Japanese have been very good to McDonald's and I also want to thenk (sic) them for their wonderful support. / Sincerely, / (signature) / Richard J. McDonald / P.S. Richard McDonald, American restaurateur who designed the golden arches logo and the number-of-hamburgers-sold sign for the fast-food restaurant franchise that he and his brother started and gave the family name to; after being purchased by Ray Kroc, the business expanded into a large and well-known international chain. He was born Feb. 16, 1909 in Manchester, New Hampshire and died July 14, 1998 in Manchester, New Hampshire.
