A rare and original handwritten letter from COLONEL ROBERT ORR at Springfield, Massachusetts, dated March 23, 1805, and written to his son Doctor Hector Orr, who lived at East Bridgewater, Massachusetts. He writes of trying to settle the estate of his father Hugh Orr, and wishes his son to attend to the business as he cannot get there to obtain his part of the estate. \"I wish you to STICK UP TO THEM\" to get it done. He also passes along information about his wife and other sons...One page,7 3/4\" x 12 1/2\" [too large for scanner, shown in two parts], docketed on reverse, handmade rag paper, folds, good condition with minor edge damage.....ROBERT ORR [1745-1811] and his father, HUGH ORR[1715-1798],cast the first cannons ever made in America at their foundry in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, in 1775 and provided muskets and cannon for the Revolutionary War by government contract in 1776. Colonel Orr served in the Continental Army and later manufactured the first scythes by water power in America. He was appointed the first Superintendent and Armorer of the Springfield Armory in 1795 and helped design the first muskets [Model 1795] for the United States Army.
