ROYAL DOULTON 1.5 QT. HUNTSMAN’S JUG - CIRCA 1920’S:

This is a beautiful medium brown glaze jug made by Royal Doulton circa 1920’s. On one side is a cartouche of two horses on a dark brown ground with “See Our Steeds Caparisoned” hand printed in gold above them. Above this cartouche is also hand printed in gold “Huntsman’s Jug”. On the back is a poem which is also hand printed in gold:

“See our steeds comparisoned,
to join the hunt today,
By hill and holt to follow,
Hound & Horn and huntsman’s helloa,
Follow! Follow! Where they lure us,
Follow, Follow,
as we may.
White Melville.”

Below the spout is a riding crop or whip in gold. There are two marks on the bottom of the pitcher. One is the Royal Doulton trade mark stamp used from 1902 to 1922 and 1927 to 1936. There is also another mark that I cannot identify. It looks like a question mark inside an oval. Both marks are under glaze. The pitcher is 7 inches tall and 3-1/4 inches in diameter at the rim. The bottom foot rim is also 3-1/4 inches in diameter. The widest point of the body is about 4-1/2 inches in diameter. It holds 1-1/2 quarts or 6 cups. There is crazing in the glaze. The gold decoration around the rim, the base, the handle and all the printing is in excellent condition with little wear. This is a beautiful pitcher or jug. Was this an advertising jug?
