Russ Hamilton***Lou Gehrig and the150 Year Anniversary of Baseball***Only 60 Made ABOUT THISCOVER

Thefeature stamp on thishand drawn and individually hand painted, all-overFDC by the ultra-gifted artist, RussHamilton, is the PO1989Lou Gehrig25¢stamp, Scott # 2417. ( Thisstamp is a special 50 year anniversary stamp .. . please see next paragraph, below. )

Aboutthe inspiration for the feature stamp :Yankee great, Lou Gehrig\'s innumerable feats on the Diamond are a matter ofrecord, yet, sadly, his illustrious career was cut short by a diseasewhich would come to bear his name --- Lou Gehrig\'s Disease. In spite of Gehrig\'s accomplishments on the field, the PO chose to honortheinner spirit of Baseball\'s Iron Horse.Knowing that he had a disease for which there was no cure .. . a fatal disease that would shortly thereafter claim his life .. . Lou Gehrig proudly stood before a stadium packed with fans in1939, and acknowledged to them that he had some \"badbreaks,\" but then went on to emphasize that, overall, his life had been blessed, for his having the opportunitiesthathe was able to enjoy, and blessed,as well, for the loyal fansthat cameout to cheer him on throughout the years. Then toward the end ofhis speech, heconcluded with these enduring words :\"Today,I am the luckiest man on the face of the earth.\"About a year later, Lou Gehrig passed away. This stamp, and cover, then, celebrates the50 Year Anniversaryof Lou Gehrig\'s Farewell Speech to his fans at Yankee Stadium. ( Andnot only that, but because it is widely accepted that the game of baseball wasinvented in 1839, this is also a 150 year anniversary cover. It was a true “strokeof genius” that the PO decided to release a Dual-Anniversary stamp, such asthis. )

Aboutthe feature stamp, itself :this distinguished looking stamp shows the Iron Horse performing his\"magic\" at home plate, while above him, a more pensive Gehrig staresout into the distance, as he proudly reminisces on hisstellar career on the Diamond.

Aboutthehand painted cachet:onthisimpressively laid-outcachet, Mr. Hamilton invites us to Yankee Stadiumwhere we see a pitcher hurling a “bullet” at the batter who is hoping to hitone out of the park, while the onlookers cheer on their hero.

About the cancellation site :aptly enough, this cover was called in Cooperstown, New York, which isthe home of the heralded BaseballHall of Fame.

Aboutthe Scarcity Factor:please note that Mr. Hamilton made only 60 of these Grand Slam covers.

Allin all, an apt philatelic shout-out to one of Baseball\'s true immortals.

INTERESTINGTIDBIT : in 1942, the great Gary Cooper starred as the legendary Lou Gehrigin the movie classic, The Pride of the Yankees. Oneof the finest sports movies ever made, it followed Gehrig\'s life, from hisboyhood on the streets of New York, to his all-star career with the BronxBombers, and finally, to his tearful farewell speech at Yankee Stadium.Interestingly enough, co-starring in the movie, was Babe Ruth, Gehrig\'sreal-life teammate, who played himself.
