$998.72

This is an exceptionally rare Bellarmine jug bearing thearms of Cologne, circa 1580 standing approx 8 3/4\" high.

A brief history of the Arms of Cologne:

Cologne was one of the most important towns in Germanyobtaining its \"rights\" as a city in the 12th Century. The oldest seals, dating from 1149, onlyshowed Saint Peter, the patron of the city.Neither The Saint nor his symbol of the two crossed keys appeared in thearms of the city itself. They do appear however with a black cross, the symbolof Cologne, in many civic arms around the city.

The three crowns, representing the three Holy Kings, firstappeared on the arms in 1315, in a chief above a silver shield. Relics of thethree kings were taken to the city in 1164 by Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa. In circa 1500, the shield was filled withErmine. Officially there are elevenErmin tails, representing the 11,000 Virgins of Saint Ursula. Saint Ursula was a Princess of Brittany(Bretagne) and the arms of that region are a plain shield of Ermine.

This fine jug of squat bulbous form bears three medallions, each with the Arms of Cologne along with typical bearded mask.

Decorated too with tiger-glaze.

Condition – Restored.Body re-joined together. Twoareas of minor filling (can be seen internally but not evidentexternally). Handle re-attached and therim to the neck aperture has been restored. These repairs have been executed very well and can only be detectedunder very close scrutiny (see images).
