We are listing this very rare 1724-1726 Georgian sterling silver apostle terminal serving spoon by the London silversmith John Gibbons. Apostle spoons were first introduced in the 1500s and 1600s, primarily in Germany and England. Apostle terminals included representations of Jesus, his twelve apostles, and other saints, and they obviously were tied to the Christian religion, during a period when it was undergoing great changes. This spoon has the classic apostle spoon shape with its rounded bowl, square handle, and apostle terminal (St. Andrew, I believe). The spoon is marked on the back of its handle with a lion passant, the date letter H or K (used in 1723-1724 and 1725-1726), a crowned leopard\'s head, and an I*G maker\'s mark. This mark was registered in 1724 by London silversmith John Gibbons (see page 102 of Grimwade\'s London Goldsmiths 1697-1837). The spoon is 7.25 inches long, weighs a substantial 1.6 ounces, has a very nice shape and apostle terminal, and it is in very good overall condition (there is some kind of a light tarnish sheen in the bowl, which does not come off with a cloth). Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself (the spoon has not been professionally polished). A very rarely seen piece of early 1700s Georgian sterling silver.
