Very fine and extremely rare Patek Philippe Inking Chronograph Pocket Watch from which approximately only 98 pieces were made by the company.Extract from the Archives included, confirming production of the watch in 1879 and its subsequent sale on January 17th, 1879.Signed Patek Philippe & Co., Geneve, No. 58238. Complete original condition, working properly. Round 57.5 mm open-face silver case with snap back, white enamel dial calibrated for 60 seconds, Arabic numerals, large central hand with ink bowl and discharging pointer, subsidiary dial for 60 minutes register. When activated the hand releases a trace of ink on the dial to give a visual read-out of the elapsed time. Cal. 20\'\'\' three-quarter plate gilt-finished keyless cylinder movement, 8 jewels, plain three-arm brass balance. Very fine and extremely rare Patek Philippe Inking Chronograph Pocket Watch from which approximately only 98 pieces were made by the company.Extract from the Archives included, confirming production of the watch in 1879 and its subsequent sale on January 17th, 1879.
Case and movement numbered, dial signed Patek Philippe & Co., Geneve. Watch No. 58238.
Original, working properly. Round 57.5 mm open-face silver case with snap back, white enamel dial calibrated for 60 seconds, Arabic numerals, large central hand with ink bowl and discharging pointer, subsidiary dial for 60 minutes register. Cal. 20\'\'\' three-quarter plate gilt-finished keyless cylinder movement, 8 jewels, plain three-arm brass balance.The inking chronograph operates by means of a hand composed of two parts. The lower part is fitted with an ink bowl and the upper part with a thin needle which, when activated, compresses the lower part to release a trace of ink on the dial to give a visual read-out of the elapsed time. It is interesting to note that an identical inking chronograph with the preceding number 58’236 was sold in Christie’s sale House on 9 November 2014, lot 7, SFr. 16,250. The name behind the invention of the Inking Chronograph is Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec, watchmaker to King Louis Philippe of France, born in Toulouse in 1781. The inking chronograph was then improved and perfected by Frederick Louis Fatton, one of Breguet’s most gifted workmen.
