This is an incredibly rare 18th Century \"first edition\" book, dating to 1758, with multiple works including:
\"A vindication of the Histories of the Old and New Testament in Answer to the Objections of the late Lord Bolingbroke in Two Letters to a young nobleman\" By the right Reverend Dr. Robert Clayton. Dublin Printed, London, Reprinted for W. Bowyer, and sold by M. Cooper, in Pater-noster Row, and George Woodfall, and Charing Crofs.\" 140 pages.
Also included is:
\"A Letter to a Young Gentleman of Oxford\" by Edward Bentham, B. D. Fellow of Oriel College. There is a time to keep silence and a time to speak. Eccles. iii 7. the Second Edition London. Printed for S. Birt and M. Senex; and J. Fletcher and J. Barrett, in Oxford MDCCXLIX\" (1749). 32 Pages
Also included is: \"A Letter to a Fellow of a College Being the Sequel of a Letter to a Young Genglemen of Oxford\" By Edward Bentham, B.D. Fellow of Oriel College. Demoth Philipp. London printed for S. Birt and Mary Senex and J. Fletcher in Oxford MDCCXLIX (1749) 72 pages.
There is also a section called \"Errata\" and \"SIRIS a Chain of PHILOSOPHICAL REFLECTIONS AND INQUIRIES\" 174 PAGES, and a \"Contents\" section in the back.
The book is measures about 5\" by 8\" by 1 3/4\" thick.
The leather binding, and its original \"stringing\", is very worn and disintegrated in places, but its really impressive that it still exists at all, along with the front and back cover boards.
Pages run the gamut from good condition, to tears (with repairs), stains, fading, and worm holes. but the good news is that many pages are still crisp after all these years and it appears the book is fully intact! There are also some old handwritten entries, including signatures, with 18th century dates!!!
As you can see in the pictures, the \"Vindication\" title page has an old repair.
This book has sections that are still being re-printed today (Vindication, and Oxford Letters), but of course, this is the original 18th century version!!!!
I did a fair amount of internet research and I could not find another true first edition of this important Robert Clayton Work!
This book is an amazing survivor and belongs in a museum!
