Here is a gorgeous and very scarce, if not rare, pure Art Deco -- in style and era -- Celestial Chart or as it is titled, \"STAR MAP\", deigned and illustrated by Elizabeth Shurtleff for the Hagstrom Company, Inc., New York City, the famous map making company. This is an Art Map or Poster that dates from the 1930\'s or even possibly the late 1920\'s. It is an original Lithographic Print. The poster map/chart is printed on heavy stock paper and was Factory Assembled by Hagstrom upon a 5mm cardboard sheet. This map was not glued to or \"laid down\" after market; it was produced this way by Hagstrom. The original string to hang it is still attached. There are four (4) brass riveted holes at the corners for hanging. Along the edge of the cardboard, not affecting the print, is a buff colored cloth tape to protect the edges of the poster board. One look at this taped edge and you can see it was machine applied. The print is done in deep, rich colors of red, blue, indigo, yellow, and green. The Heavens of the Milky Way are shown by a Double Hemisphere layout with the Constellations done in the classical Mythological Figures of the Zodiac, such as the Virgo queen and Orion. The chart\'s Key is appropriately placed at the center top of the print above the two hemispheres. It is flanked on either side by two nude red cherubs, or cupids; one is reading the poem, \"Twinkle Twinkle Little Star\". Below, near the joining of the two hemispheres are nice motifs ofDiana, the goddess of the hunt and a spectacular illustrationof Apollo, god of the moon commanding a chariot pulled by red horses. These illustrations are typical of the mythological figures shown on this poster map. Ms. Shurtleff\'s facsimile signature appears at the bottom right of the Eastern Hemisphere (see Photo 10). The poster is 29 1/4\" x 20\". This poster is a true period piece, andits coloration, style, and subject matter are quintessential Art Deco. Withintop and bottom narrative inner border of the print, all the constellations shown are named and their importance explained. This poster was creased long its horizontal axis years ago, causing it to be somewhat warped, front to back, and causing a crease, or bend left to right/right to left, as fully explained in the Condition Section. But for this early, one-event damage, this pint and its backing would be in near mint, if not better condition. I feel it\'s important to emphasize that, because this is a very hard to find and a very beautiful period piece that should appeal to map and poster collectors alike. It would compliment any celestial globe collection and stand out in any library, den, living room, or office.
