Rare 1937 Redware
Lead Glazed Green Colored
Large Lidded Pot with Handle
By Isaac Stahl
Powder Valley Pennsylvania

For your Antique Redware A most beautiful in form and color large and rather substantial redware pot with its original lid. This glazed piece has a flat circular base with sides curving in from waist to neck rising to a shaped rim. The pot has an applied handle with a loop at the end. The handle is attached at the rim and at the waist. The sides curve in from the waist down to the shaped base. The base is impressed with a repeating design as is a raised band above the waist right below the neck. The piece has a domed lid with a central knob shaped finial;. The lid, which is footed sits on the rim and appears to be original to the piece, a miracle for a piece that is 80 years old. The piece is glazed inside and out in a green and brown spots coloring. The edge of the lid is unglazed as is the bottom of the pot and both show the typical coloring of redware. This is just a great looking piece made in the Stahl Pottery in Powder Valley Pennsylvania. The bottom shows details about the potter and the pottery as well as the date the piece was made. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

  • Date: May 14, 1937.
  • Origin: Powder Valley, SouthEastern Pennsylvania
  • Size: The pot is ~4 1/2\" in diameter at the base, ~5 1/4\" diameter at the top, and is ~7\" high with the lid on to the top of the finial. The piece is ~7 1/4\" at its widest including the handle. The piece weighs almost 2 pounds and 10 ounces.
  • Maker: Isaac Stahl.
  • Marks: Marked \"Made by I. S. Stahl May 14 1937\" incised on the bottom along the edge of the base. There is also the letters S. P. for Stahl Pottery in the center of the base.
  • Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very nice unusual piece in form and color that is in great good condition after being around for 80 years made by one of the best and most famous potters from SouthEastern Pennsylvania. Very well done and would display very well in your collection of Pennsylvania redware.
  • Condition: The pot is great condition with no breaks, cracks, hairlines, or chips. The glaze has a very fine crazing pattern that is difficult to see due to the coloring of the piece but is there. The piece has some of the manufacturing defects you would expect in a primitive piece of redware of this vintage such as pops, slubs, areas where the glaze did not fully flow, and unglazed spots. This piece has very few such issues. The piece also has one or two small flakes to the glaze along the edge of the rim. Finally, the piece has a small firing crack at the bottom of the handle, which we show in the last photo. This crack is an artifact of the making, does not go through, and the piece is solid and intact. Other than that the piece is just beautiful, great looking, and would display very well in your collection. Please view photos for additional condition information.
