Exceptional watercolor by listed midcentury American artist Bernard Caster (1921-1996), who studied, worked and lived largely in Central and Western New York (Syracuse, Rochester), while also being represented by galleries in New York. Vivid, deep color and skillful shading distinguish the street tableau, titled “Indian Furlough” on back in pencil. Signed and date “44” in pencil in the lower right corner. Additional pencil writing on back identifies the artwork as deriving from the collection of Clayton Fowler of Canton, New York (himself an artist). Large-format watercolor on flexible board, measuring 13.5” by 10.25”, total dimensions with mat 21.75” by 17.75”. Watercolor in excellent condition overall, free of holes or spotting, some slight waviness from flexibility of board. Mat with light soiling.
