Rare Huntley & Palmers Tin – “World”

This rare antique English biscuit tin from Huntley & Palmers is called “World,” and dates to 1891. With gracefully rounded sides and a hinged lid, this tin is decorated with scenes from around the world. The lid is devoted to Europe, with the base sporting scenes from America, Africa, Australasia, and Asia. While the image for America involves a train, animals seem to play important roles in the scenes for the other continents. I saw mention of a front clasp in my research, but there is not one present, nor any evidence that there ever was one, as far as I can tell.

The tin has antique wear and patina, and the lid is especially worn, with several circular and drip-like areas of silver showing. Also there is wear near the edges of the lid. In general, there are some small areas of wear, some scratches and scuffs, handling marks, some soiling, some minor dents and dings, some rust, etc. The colors have faded with age. Some clusters of wear around the base. Possibly some early rust starting here and there. The inside is dark with patina, with sparse and minimal surface rust. The bottom is in nice shape except for a patch of rust at one edge. Hinges are well attached and move freely, and tin opens and closes fine.

Again, condition issues of note:

· Antique wear and patina.

· Lid very worn with circular and drip-shaped marks where silver shows, and wear near edges.

· Colors have faded, muted.

· Some clusters of wear around base.

· Rust patch on bottom.

Approximate size of tin is about 6 7/8” by 4.75” by about 3.5” tall.

The tin is empty.
