A fine brass Gunter\'s rule/scale by Thomas Wright (1711– 1786), noted as a mathematical instrument maker to King George II. The rule is inscribed \'Fecit (he made) Wright\' and is believed to date from the first half of the 18th century on the basis that Wright retired from the manufacture of such items around 1748. The Gunter\'s scale was a calculating aid and predecessor to the slide rule, used primarily in marine navigation. The rule has been left in \'as found\' condition so displays some tarnishing and cosmetic wear as shown, but is otherwise in very good condition for its age.Measures 30.4 cm long by 3.7 cm wide, 1.5mm thick.
