VERY NICE OLD CHERRY & BRASS LEVEL . I AM NOT SURE OF AGE BUT THE ONLY OTHER ONE I HAVE SEEN IS ON SO I COPYED THERE DETAILS. A RARE ONE c1790s EIGHTEENTH CENTURY BRASS & CHERRY 3\" x 11/16\" ANTIQUE SPIRIT LEVELThis is not a typical antique pocket level by any means; this rare piece has been looked at and is dated anywhere from as early as the 1780s to up to the 1810s. The main identifiers being the circular cut pattern to the cherry; the grooves match exactly to pieces from that time period. Also, the brass is held in place by very early rivets that predated screws. One can see in the zoomed in photos how the rivets have been hammered into place; also fitting in with the time period. Further there are no markings or engravings on the brass which again helps associate it with the very early date. This level is small and definitely nothing like a typical antique pocket level one sees. Its base measures 5 inches and its brass face measures only 3 inches long and only measures 11/16 of an inch thick! The base measures 5 inches long and the level boasts very interesting triangled edges rather than the typical rectangular shape. This level is in gorgeous condition; the cherry is vibrant and once can see the elegant circular groove marks all around; a very heavy piece for its tiny size. The brass is gorgeous and has not been touched; this is all original patina. The detail of the hammer marks in the rivets are truly amazing and the age of the glass around the spirit can really be noticed when you examine the elegant patina formed around its base.
