DESCRIPTION

This is a rare antique silver / steel-lined thimblefeaturing Horner’s Princess May pattern to the top and upper part of the shaftpattern decoration to the top and shaft with two indented bands separating a wideplain band at below. The plain band is marked C.H 6 LITTLE DORCAS, indicating athimble produced by Charles Horner of Northgate, Halifax. Indeed, the C.H markis exactly the same as maker’s marked used by Horner on hallmarked, solid silverthimbles of the of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

DORCAS thimbles of various ages come up for salefairly frequently but the LITTLE DORCAS is much scarcer. This was an attempt byHorner to introduce a budget version of the original Dorcas thimbles, with thesame characteristics and reputation, but at a cheaper price. This costreduction being achieved by being a little shorter and having a slightlyflatter top. More information can be seen on pages 112-114 of A History of Thimbles by Edwin Holmes.

A rare thimble for discerning collectors.
