DR. ERNST SCHILLING - A renowned Austrian physician and political activistDESCRIPTION

This impressive antique medical diploma comes directly from the estate of my family, direct descendants of its original owner ERNST SCHILLING, a renowned Austrian physician.

Dr. Schilling served the Austrian royal family in Vienna in the mid-1800s. His wife was a head-lady-in-waiting to the Austrian Empress.

An influential member of the Viennese aristocracy, Dr. Schilling was also a political activist in the 1850s and eventually emigrated with his family to the United States to start a successful practice in New York City. He joined with a group of other reformist physicians who worked tirelessly during and after the Civil War period to upgrade area hospitals to provide better care, especially for the needy. He died in New York in 1876 and is buried in Brooklyn.

The prestigious University of Vienna was founded in 1365, and remains the world\'s oldest university in the German-speaking world. It boasts many famous scientist graduates, including Sigmund Freud, Gregor Mendel (founder of genetics), and Christian Doppler (discovered the Doppler Effect). Many of the world\'s first specialty clinics were founded there, beginning in the early 1800s.

* This diploma is entirely in Latin, as was the custom of that period.

* Heavyweight parchment (animal hide).

* Dated Jan. 11, 1844, on the official stamp at the top of diploma, and in the text the date of the medical degree is given as Jan. 30, 1844.

* Degree conferred is Doctor of Medicine, with a specialty in Hepatic (liver) disorders.

* Attached carved wood seal-box contains a large and detailed red wax seal of the Vienna University.

* Measurements: 22\" wide x 15-1/4\" length

CONDITION

I am not an expert on such documents, but I would describe it as Good Antique Condition for a piece of this age.

* Wax seal and seal-box are in excellent condition - very rare to have the seal so clear and intact like this.

* All text is extremely clear and crisp, all text and signatures are readable

* Parchment has color variations and a few small discoloration areas from aging.

* Please note: Has been previously folded in sixths and bears the resulting creases.

* Small 1/4\" rip in upper edge at crease line; 3 very small holes in lower left portion -- one hole is near a signature but all is still readable and main text is unaffected
