Rare Antique Hammond No.12 Typewriter w/ Ideal (Curved) Keyboard - This is an awesome, awesome old piece!! This model was introduced in 1905. It has the ideal keyboard which is a curved shape and made up of 2 rows of keys. This model was the last typewriter of any kind to have this type of keyboard. It also has the ivory colored celluloid decorative name plate and space bar-the no. 12 model and the no. 2 model are the only antique typewriters that have this feature. It is attached to a quarter sawn oak, also called tiger oak, base. It most likely originally came with a matching wooden top, but we do not have that piece. It has its original keys that are made of bakelite, although a part of one of the end keys has chipped off. We are not quite sure how the typewriter should work, but when you press a key, we assume the letter is printed and a bell rings and the typewriter advances. All the keys seem to work and when we put paper in the top, we could see the letters being imprinted in paper. One of the ribbon spools is still attached and whole; the ribbon spool on the other side has broken off therefore we could not see inked letters. The whole spool has the name Hammond Typewriter debossed on it. The cartridge release lever on the side is still in working order. We are not sure how paper is supposed to be loaded, but the platen knob does not roll the platen. The platen does have some cracking due to age. There is a bronze looking medallion attached to the base with the Hammond logo. It has its serial # 60168 on the side. Would benefit from a good cleaning. We have done our best to describe the typewriter, but please feel free to ask questions. The typewriter looks like it is complete except for the case top, the chipped off key, and the broken ribbon spool. Would be great for an enthusiast to restore or just to display as a conversation piece in your home. This came from an Acworth, GA estate.
