Extremely Rare Antique Pair Of German Silver Sabbath Candlesticks, Ca 1840, Judaica.

An extremely rare antique pair of German silver (NOT silver plated) Sabbath candlesticks, Ca 1840, Judaica.

Formed as rampant lions holding flowering sprays ending in leaf chased sconces with detachable nozzles.

Domed bases applied at the top with insects and animals, the bases are embossed with cartouches enclosing – Isaac\'s binding, Jacob\'s dream, the lighting of Sabbath candles, Samson wrestling the lion, King Solomon\'s trial and a shepherd looking heavenwards.

Marked on both bases with the German \"13\" and other German hallmarks as seen in the pictures.

Very good condition, some remains of the original gilding, minor professional restoration of two flowers and two leaves.

Height: 21cm / 8.26in.

Base diameter: 9.5cm / 3.74in.

Weight: 516gr / 16.6oz.

Sabbath candlesticks of this design were first made in Germany in the 18th century and continued until well into the 19th century.

The present examples were produced, most probably, in the 19th century.

They should not be confused with the late inferior copies made in Portugal in the 1950\'sm which are discussed in Jay Weinstein, A Collector\'s Guide to Judaica, London, 1985, p.45, nos.26-27.
