The top of the box shows 3 resting sheep, a Shepherd\'s cap and staff, a water jug, but no Shepherd. The sides of the box have high relief sculptured hearts with arrows going through them on both sides, it also has high relief sculptured floral and foliate design. One end of the box is inscribed NAMGREB (Bergman spelled backwards) and above the signature it has the Bergman foundry mark. When you look at the box with the sheep on top, it looks perhaps like a beautiful paper weight or jewelry box. When you pull the little spring loaded gold button on the side of the box and push a corner of the top, it revolves locks into place and you see the Shepherd making love to his beautiful girlfriend. This box most likely was in a home with children. I say this because the underside that shows the Shepherd and the nude lady is in such pristine superb condition with all the original cold paint patina intact it looks as though it was rarely if ever opened for display. This is an extremely high quality mechanical bronze sculpture in extraordinary condition. It is pictured in Joe Zobel\'s book on Antique Vienna Bronzes on page 216. This is one of the most rare and sought after of all the Bergman mechanical erotica or sometimes called naughty antique Vienna Bronzes. I have only owned one of these before in the more than 45 years we have been in the antique business specializing in antique bronzes. There are probably less than a dozen of this model known to exist. I feel very fortunate to have found 2 in my career. One was found in Buenos Aires several years ago, this one was just purchased from a collection in the mid west. It will make a wonderful addition to any advanced Vienna Bronze collection. Almost all the serious Vienna bronze collections I have seen are lacking this rare item. The box measures 6-1/2 inches long, 3-1/8 inches wide, and a little more than 2 inches high to top of sheep\'s head. Weight 1208.8 grams.
