The Reed & Barton story began in 1824, when Isaac Babbitt created a new metal alloy - \"Britannia metal\" - in his Taunton, Massachusetts pewter shop.Babbitt joined forces with craftsmen Henry G. Reed and Charles E. Barton to produce this innovative, higher quality pewter ware. When Babbitt encountered financial difficulties, Reed & Barton offered to take control and began manufacturing products under their own names. The fledgling company\'s goods reflected uncompromising standards of excellence, starting with its initial silverplate products and extending to the exquisite sterling silver creations that resulted from the silver discoveries of the late 1800s.The company has remained privately owned by the family of Henry Reed. Besides the flatware for which it is renowned, Reed & Barton operates other brands as well: Reed & Barton Handcrafted Chests, the world\'s largest manufacturer of handmade chests, cigar humidors, pen chests, and hardwood flatware. Miller Rogaska Crystal, handmade stemware. Sheffield Collection, a company started in 1908 and purchased by Reed & Barton in 1973.Reed & Barton maintains its headquarters in Taunton, Massachusetts, once known as \"Silver City\" because of the number of silver companies operating there.

The Statler Hotel company was founded by Ellsworth Milton (E. M.) Statler. The first Statler hotel was designed by August Esenwein and James A. Johnson (architect) and built in Buffalo , New York in 1907 and originally offered 300 rooms and bathrooms. The Buffalo hotel was very successful and led to a chain of hotels in other cities, including Detroit , Cleveland , St. Louis and Boston . After Statler\'s death in 1928 more hotels were opened in Washington , D.C., Los Angeles , Hartford and Dallas . Statler also managed the Hotel Pennsylvania for the Pennsylvania Railroad at one point. \'s some trivia: Statler was the first major hotel chain to have a bathroom in every room. His innovative Statler Plumbing Shaft is still used in modern construction. Also, Statler & Waldorf are two Muppet characters and were named after the New York Statler Hotel (now the Hotel Pennsylvania ) and the Walforf-Astoria Hotel.

In May 1954, stockholders of Hotels Statler Co. Inc. sought to sell the chain. Conrad N. Hilton announced in August 1954 that his company was buying a $37.65 million controlling interest in Statler Hotels Inc., about $292 million today. By October 1954, Hilton had bought the rest of the Statler company — nine Statler hotels and two office buildings — for a total of $111 million (about $860 million today).

In January 1958 wishing to honor Conrad Hilton, the Directors of Hilton Hotels Corp. order that all Statler Hotels become Statler Hilton Hotels. This minor name change marks the beginning of a process of erasing the hotel\'s Statler identity.

The featured item represents a bowl that measures approximately 3 1/4\" tall, 9\" in diameter at the lips and 4 1/4\" at the bottom. The piece is silver soldered a term used for high-quality silverplate. Most restaurant items had to be of good quality in order to stand up to heavy use. The bowl is very solid and heavy for its size.

The bowl is raised on pedestal and is decorated with raised pattern at the rim. The bottom is stamped with \"Reed & Barton / Silver Soldered / 1300C2 / 2P\". The \"2P\" probably indicates the capacity - 2 pints. The other numbers are style numbers.

I am not quite sure of the exact year of production of thebowl as I don\'t see any year symbols that Reed and Barton usually stamp on their pieces. The Statler chain operated under its name between 1907 and 1958 but I\'ve seen similar style bowls made in the 30\'s so I am more likely to believe that is thecirca the featured bowl was manufactured.

Theitem comes in well-preserved condition for its age with the usual vintage wear like dings and scratches. You can see some irregularity in the shape at the bottom and the rim area and some patina but all give a nice antique appearance to the piece.

Thebowl will make a gorgeous addition to any collection. Could be agreatgiftfor someone who worked for Statler Hotels. It can be the perfect display fortable in your vintage or antique room!
