This kind of box is traditionally used to store the powder for tilaka, a Hindu mark worn on the forehead and other parts of the body. The powder may be made with sandalwood paste, ashes, kumkum, sindhoor, clay, or other substances. In some regions a mixture of abir, a red powder, yogurt, and grains of rice is worn.This is a beautiful Rare box. Made of brass, it has a star design which can be seen on the bottom. Made of solid brass, it has FIVE teardrop shaped areas for powder, with lids on each. The peacock in the center loosens thus loosening all of the compartment lids. Tightening the center peacock tightens all compartment lids at once. Awesome design!! The peacock stands in the center with peahens on each of the five compartments.
