Original circa 1850 sixth-plate daguerreotype photo of James Stebbins (b.1828 in Illinois),
wearing miners\' work clothes and kerchief. Jim went to California in 1849 to strike it
rich in the Gold Rush; researching online, I found an 1850 census record of him working
in a Sacramento mining camp.

Included is this great original note, written by and signed by the sitter, that is
folding up inside of the case, behind the dag. Hard for me to decipher every word but
you can see he mentions his mining clothes(\"apparals\" I think it says).Here is what I can read of the note:Jim has come home with the (_) to (find or friends?) same with those he left.
I had it taking so that you (_) how I look in miners apparals but don\'t let
girls fall in love with it (_) JP StebbinsIn half of a case. It has been resealed with archival tape. No damage seenon
the plate. It has a layer of tarnish but is totally visible; a restorer
could probably brighten it up a bit or a lot.. though I like it as it is,
personally.
