[Stylized vignette of stage in motion] LEAVING AUSTIN Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, returning alternate days. Office at Wells, Fargo & Co.\'s Thos. Tate, Proprietor [ Thomas Tate was a Canadian who came to Virginia City, Nevada in 1867 and was active in establishing the first school in the Smokey Valley and was a mail route subcontractor in Nevada for 30 years. In 1886, he and his wife founded a stage station [see #10 from internet] and ran it until 1901. He was Lander County Commissioner that same year. They sold the land in 1907] G.H. W. Crockett Agent. [ George Henry Willis Crockett (1824-1889) had been a miner and stage driver in California in 1854-1862 and later was WF Agent and County Treasurer of Lander County for many years. Puts card before 1889] Long after railroads connected to many western mining communities, stagecoaches [see #8 and #9 from internet] continued to run connecting larger towns with even more remote places. Austin is located in Lander County in central Nevada and was county seat for a time. Austin[see #2 and #3 from internet] was founded in 1862 as part of a silver strike in the Reese River Mining District and after being connected to the Union Pacific in 1880, it was incorporated in 1881. However most major mines closed by 1887. Today it is a living ghost town on US 50 with a population just under 200. Belmont located in neighboring Nye County [see #4 and #5 from internet] was founded in 1865 and like Austin was a silver town. It boomed to a population of 15,000 and was county seat until 1905. However the town began to fade in the middle 1880s and today is a ghost town. Ophir [see #6 and #7 from internet] also in Nye County flourished between its founding in 1865 and 1894 hindered by poor quality ores and labor strife. Today like Belmont it is a true ghost town. A neat and rare item from the Nevada mining frontier.
