~ RARE Antique Mohair 5-Way Jointed Squirrel German ~

~ Wilhelm Strunz Felt Toy Co. ~

This is a RARE mohair toy squirrel, attributed to Wilhelm Strunz,

with grey mohair, black boot-button eyes, ochre stitched nose and mouth,

jointed swivel head, jointed limbs, and long mohair tail.

Wilhelm Strunz began producing \"soft toys\" in Nuremberg, Germany in 1904,

under the name Wilhelm Strunz Felt Toy Co. During the turn of the century

there were many soft toy manufacturers based in Nuremberg and Sonneberg such as Shuco,

Josef Deuerlein, Martin Winterbauer, Gebr. Bing, and Schreyer & Co.

It was common for manufacturers to copy the very successful Steiff product line,

especially the bears.

This squirrel is similar to an early Steiff mohair squirrel, created in 1913,

with black shoe button eyes, embroidered nose, mouth and claws,

and jointed at head, shoulders and hips.

Condition:

VERY GOOD

Boot button eyes are clear and intact.

Mohair is thinning but overall in very good condition.

No loose seams or stitches. Softwood shavings or \"excelsior\" is undisturbed.

Joints are all tight, yet move easily.

Original nose and mouth embroidered \"claws\" are clear and intact.

In the paw and foot \"claw\" embroidery, one stitched \"claw\" is missing from a paw and a foot.

Tail is stitched tightly to the squirrel\'s back.

There is no paper \"patent\" tag.
