Rare Collection 56 Antique French Victorian Turned Wood Lace Bobbins w/ Thread:

This rare lot of 56 French Victorian bobbins is very unique! Each bobbin is made out of a smooth, medium-colored wood, probably pear or fruit wood. Some display naturally occurring darker patches of wood. Each bobbin still has its beautiful, original, burnished patina -- they are gorgeous! And each one is a little different, probably because they were hand-turned and not mass-produced.
Because these are antique and were used, some of the bobbins have dents, nicks, or gouges, and a few are slightly bent. Four of the bobbins, in particular, are very bowed. Many of the bobbins still have the old cotton thread wrapped around their tops; a lot of this thread is loose and tangled.
An interesting aspect of this collection is that one of the bobbins has a head that displays a dark black substance. It appears to have been on there for awhile and was used with this substance on it, as the nicks in the side of the head are smoothed over from use wear. A second bobbin displays a dot of this darker material on the side of the head and another smaller dot on top of the head.
The bobbins measure roughly between 3 3/4 to 4 inches in length, and are approximately 1/4 inch wide. The heads measure roughly 3/8 of an inch. The turn marks can be seen on both the tops and the bottoms of each bobbin -- see photo.
These bobbins are from a non-smoking home.
