Welcome! I am pleased to offer this superb pair of Durand boudoir lamps. Figural \'Egyptian Revival\', ca 1925. The bases consist of a kneeling female form supporting a reed basket, while the lids resemble palm trees (I would say, lol). Detailed with hieroglyphic-type motifs. This was most likely in order to capitalize onall the rage at the time... the exciting discovery of King Tut\'s tomb in 1922 by explorer Howard Carter.
The pulled-feather cylindrical shades are iridescent gold, silver & green with purple highlights. Overlaid with gold spider-web threading which is as perfect as you\'re ever likely to find. I think it\'s a small miracle that after all these years they are still in such remarkable condition frankly. No chips, cracks, or losses. Andthey managed to stay together. (The only \'unoriginal\' pieceis oneof the little acorn pulls, replaced a long time ago I think.) Unsigned, however this is not at all unusual for early Durand pieces, esp of this type. Guaranteed authentic.
But what raises these to a higher level is not only are they a matched pair, they are actuallyperfume lamps! There are circular filigreed brass \'trays\' underneath the lids. If you put in a few drops of scented oil the bulb gently heats it. So 1920\'s aromatherapy I guess you could say, ha ha. Quite ingenious really. The shades give off a warm, ambient glow. Pretty fab and veryfunctional (compared to a vase anyhow I s\'pose).
They measure approx 14\"/35.5 cm tall x 4 1/2\"/11.5 cm at widest point. The glass shades measure 6\"/15 cm tall x 3.5\"/9 cm in diameter (shape 10240, decor. \'AA\', ref Meschi, Durand: Man and his Glass). The bases were made by the Weidlich Bros. May be bronze/copper alloy (verdigris bits?) but I\'m not a \'metals expert\' so can\'t say for sure, sorry. They have been re-wired at some point for safety and have useful on/off toggle switches mid-cord. And they are very heavy... each one weighs almost 4.5 lbs/2 kg. Packed up carefully for shipping the box will be close to 10 lbs.
I\'ve never seen an intact pair of Durands exactly like this before. They easily equal the quality of anyperiod works by Steuben, Quezal, or even Tiffany, in my humble opinion. Many talented gaffers from those makers ended up at Durand\'s \'Fancy Shop\' in 1924 anyhow including Martin Bach Jr., after Quezal\'s sad demise.
