Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (1841-1935). Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of theUnited States from 1902 to 1932.

Autograph Letter Signed, 1 page 8vo, [Boston] April 1,1869. “Dear Sir. Mrs. Clapp’s address is 1236 Washington St. herfull name is Julia E. Clapp.” Very good,a very early example when Holmes was practicing law in Boston, and scare of anydate. Mrs. Clapp was listed in the Boston directory for1870 as a widow, so she was probably married to William Clapp who had died in1868.

Noted for his long service, his concise and pithy opinionsand his deference to the decisions of elected legislatures, he is one of themost widely cited United States Supreme Court justices in history, particularlyfor his \"clear and present danger\" opinion for a unanimous Court inthe 1919 case of Schenck v. United States, and is one of the most influentialAmerican common law judges, honored during his lifetime in Great Britain aswell as the United States. Holmes retired from the Court at the age of 90years, 309 days, making him the oldest Justice in the Supreme Court\'s history. He also served as an Associate Justice and as Chief Justice on theMassachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, and was Weld Professor of Law at theHarvard Law School, of which he was an alumnus.

Obviously Holmes lived a long, very full life so hiscomplete biography here would take up too much space. Numerous biographies of him are online.
