Up for sale is a Beautiful Set/Lot of Antique Vintage Early Nuremberg German Bronze Nest of Weights / Nesting Weights (Merchants / Apothecary Weight Collectible). These were obtained from an sale out of the historic Buckland Tavern in Berryville Virginia. The weights have several markings (I\'m unable to identify) & have an ornate, engraved design throughout the exterior of the large, master weight.
The hinged lid is marked \"S\" and \"8\". There\'s also an engraving of an animal or character, which I\'m not sure what it is. On the inside of the lid, there are 2 words engraved underneath (looks like \"Akena\") but I don\'t know for sure. The base of the master weight is marked \"4\". One of the smaller inside weights is marked \"1\". Another weight looks like someone\'s initials engraved (almost cursive), which looks like \"TY\", but I can\'t say for sure.
The entire set weighs approximately 5.15 pounds. The larger master weight (that\'s marked \"4\") weighs 4 pounds alone. The master weight is 4\" wide at the top (not including the hinges & accents). The total width of the entire item is5 1/4\"wide. The diameter of the base of the master weight is 2 5/8\". The master weight is 4 1/8\" tall (to the top of the decorative part, when the handle isn\'t raised). The smaller interior weights measure as follows: 7/8\" wide x 1/2\" tall; 1 1/8\" wide x 5/8\" tall; 1 3/8\" wide x 1 7/8\" tall; 1 3/4\" wide x 1\" tall. There\'s a flat weight that\'s approximately 2 3/4\" in diameter.
I have not personally used or tested these weights; they were all obtained together from the sale, in the condition as shown. Cosmetically, the bronze shows heavy age and use: tarnish, discoloration, scrapes/scuffs, pitting, darkening, uneven patina etc...
