This circa 1840 English blue transferware platter is decorated in a rare chinoiserie pattern that includes a man on a donkey, people washing dishes on the right, mountains, exotic trees, and a fence. Lovely sunflowers, mums, and peonies adorn the pineapple patterned border.
This platter has a metal strap hanger attached and I am not removing it as it adds character to this piece, the hanger is probably from the late 1800\'s. The platter has some edge glaze rubbing and there is one short hairline on one side.

The Transferware Collector Club describes the pattern by unattributed maker in this way, \"It is an oriental scene with a traveler leaving an inn and winding his way into the unknown. Four faces watch him go, apprehensive for his safety. The long ears of his mule set against the water beyond seem to emphasize the loneliness of this intrepid traveller. Where will they be tonight?\" Discussion in FOB #104, p. 9 suggests that the pattern may be based on a water color by Samuel Daniell, signed and dated 1801. The title is \"Return from the Hunt\". No image has come to light for that title although \"Boars Returning from Hunting\", dated 1804, by the same artist, is available online. The figure on horseback in that print has a large animal draped over the horse behind the rider. Returning and departing look much different in a picture. The pattern here has a strong feeling of departing.\"
