Description:On offer from our private collection is this rare & exceptional signed female shaman mask from the Tsimshian peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast (North America) — specifically from the Kitsumkalum clan. Common to such shaman masks is the asymmetric face painting, & in the masks representing female spirits — as in this piece — a labret (lip plug) is also a prominent feature. The high level of artistry & workmanship in this mask is immediately evident. The delicate facial contours are expertly sculpted., creating a most human visage, & the highly detailed painted designs are no less expertly conceived & executed. An exquisite, refined, & elegant piece... The mask is dated & numbered, with the inscription: March 11, 1981, No. 7. Overall condition: despite a couple of minor imperfections, this hauntingly beautiful mask is in very good overall condition, & would make a superb acquisition for any serious ethnographic collection.
