Rare Scottish Gold & Blue Enamel Sepia Mourning Pendant/Brooch c1792Margaret Coventry was the Wife ofRev Dr James Peddie of Bristo Church, Edinburgh
A rare & important Scottish Gold Mourning Pendant/Brooch decorated with Blue & White Enamel from an important Scottish Family, which was probably commissioned by either theRev George Coventry, Minister of Stitchell in Roxburghshire or his Wifeon the death of their daughter Margaret in 1792.
Coming from a wealthy & influential Scottish family Margaret Coventry was the sister of Prof Andrew Coventry of Shanwell who was an eminentScottish Agriculturistwho becamethe first Professor of Agriculture in Great Britain when he was nominated for the Chair at Edinburgh University in 1790. Margaret was also the sister of Jane Coventry who married Dr John Dick whoreceived the degree of Doctor of Divinity from the College of Princetown, New Jersey, USA and in 1820 was appointed Theological Professor to the Associate Synod.
Margaret also married animportantScottishCleric herself; she wed the Rev Dr James Peddie of Bristo Church, Edinburgh on1 Sep 1787 in Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh. Rev Dr James Peddie was a historically important figure asMinister of the Bristo Street Secession Church in Edinburgh, 1782 -1845. He went to Edinburgh University in 1775 & was licensed to preach in 1782; eventually being assigned to Bristo Church where he stayed until his death in 1818.Marischal Collegeconferred him the Degree of Doctor of Divinity and hewas Moderator of the Burgher Synod from 1789. He alsotook a leading part in the old and new light controversy as a new light andpresided over the split between the Rev Dr John Brown\'s \'Old Light Burghers and his own \'New Light Burghers in 1799.
This wonderful Scottish Memorial Pendant/Brooch is painted in sepia tones and depicts Margaret with her sister Jane within a blue and whiteenamel frame which is over glazed, to a beaded Yellow Gold Marquis Shaped Mount (tests to around 9ct Gold) with a glazed hairwork panel verso with pierced monogram \'MC\' inGold.
Overall this fine Scottish Mourning Pendant/Brooch is in great condition with no loss of enamel and only evidence of a historic modification to the reverse side, as shown - but nothing that detracts from thiswonderful Georgian Pendant/Brooch(please study close up photographs, which form an integral part of the description). This wonderful Pendant/Brooch came to us from a Stirlingshire Country House andit is presented in the Antique Green Velvet Covered Box it came in, complete with hand written notation (please see photo\'s).
