Rare Large World War I Antique Union Jack or British Street Flag, handmade andscreen printed on natural linen cloth.Measures approximately 66\" x 37.5\"

The Flag has \"British Made\" handwritten on it, which puts it in the WWI period (1914-1918), when the British were manufacturing Flags in their homes. The \"British Made\" designation was designed to proudly differentiate these Flags and other items from foreign goods.

Sometimes referred to as a \"Street Flag,\" these were often hung in the street using halyards attached to fabric ties at the corners of the Flag. Since they were handmade, and left outdoors for extended periods of time, these Flags tend to show a great deal of wear, and are typically tattered and torn.

The colors, produced from hard wearing vegetable dyes, are still very bright on the thin cloth. The Flag is beautiful and evocative.The fabric shows appropriate signs of age, with a few holes in the middle and tears around the edges. The original off-white unbleached period linen has yellowed slightly.
