Notes: Early‘Indian Head’ red thermoplastic case retaining its original portraitambrotype on glass of a young male facing straight at the viewer. He iswearing a black suit jacket, white shirt, and black bow tie. Thephotograph is wrapped in a decorative gilt brass oval mat with checkbars and star corner preserver. The case is embossed, both front andback, with a head and shoulders portrait of a male Native American,made by Holmes, Booth & Haydens, Connecticut,1853-1901, circa 1857-60. This case is classified in Berg’s massivevolume, 2nd edition (2003) as R for “Rare, 60-150 copies known,difficult to find.” Red cases such as this one are much less commonthan black or brown ones. The front and reverse of the case display a central Indian head withfeatheredhead-dress facing sinister, a quiver of arrows behind the leftshoulder and a bow behind the right, framed within an oval cartouchethat iscontained within a squared stylized floral border with looped starsections. The front and back are fitted with recessed hinges; thefront covers interior is fitted with cushioned purple velvet having acentral embossedgeometric decoration, the back cover is fitted with Holmes, Booth& Haydens endpapers under the photograph.
