Here on offer is a rarelarge antique Santa Claus clay pipe, made in England in the late 19thcentury.

This pipe came from the Trevor Barton collection, a world renowned collector of tobaccianawho died in 2008, he had been ammasing the collection for more than fiftyyears. Trevor Barton received the rare honour of being inducted into the ‘AcademieInternationale de la Pipe’.

There are various trains ofthought as to why these large clay Tobacco pipes were made. They are often called‘cadger’, ‘advertique’ or ‘novelty’ pipes. They were normally made in England,France, Germany and Holland as display pieces for Tobacco merchants. They werealso used by smoking clubs who would pass the pipe around the group, sometimesas an initiation ceremony. Some were purchased by collectors as novelty itemsto impress smoking companions or to be given as a gift.

There is no maker attributed tothe manufacture of this pipe, antique examples rarely appear for sale, acompany called Dawnmist reproduced a small number of copies in 2002 these havethe makers name on the base, this pipe is not one of those reproductions.

Thiswonderful clay pipe is in the form of Santa Claus with a painted holly wreatharound his head. The stem is embossed on one side with ‘A HAPPY Christmas’ theother side has ‘AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR’. This greatpipe has been made using traditional techniques. The pipe appears not to havebeen smoked. The piece has a chip on the mouth piece, please study the photos,the pipe displays well.

The pipe is offered good antique condition, it measures about 21cm inlength, it weighs 185g.
