Description: Late Classic era Navajo Shoulder Blanket of the Third Phase Chief\'s Blanket style. Chief\'s blankets were the most valuable commodity the Southwest tribes produced and during the 1860s-1875 era when this was woven Chief blankets were selling for more than $50 US Gold which was more than the average annual wage west of the Mississippi at that time. They were just as valued and sought after \"back in the day\" as they are today. It is believed that most surviving examples were traded to US military personnel stationed in the Southwest and passed down through generations of a family. Very, very few pre-1875 Classic Period Navajo Chief\'s blankets survive today, and most of those that do survive are in museums and long held private collections with only a relative handful making it to the market each year.

Comments: Chief\'s blankets of the pre-1875 Classic and Late Classic era are among the most collectible and sought after of Navajo textiles and come in three main styles of \"phases\" known as First , Second and Third Phase. Chiefs blankets are just about the only Navajo textiles woven wider than tall on the loom itself with the interior warp running the \"short way\". (other rugs meant to be displayed horizontally--such as yei rugs-- are woven \"the long way\" ie sideways/vertically on the loom) First Phase blankets have alternating wide dark horizontal bands, Second phase have a nine rectangle motif within the bands and the Third phase has three rows of three diamonds extending beyond a single band. When used, colors in Classic Period chief blankets (not to be confused with post-1875 Transitional Period, rug period or modern Chiefs style blankets) are primarily raveled from individual yarns removed from bolts of trade cloths which include insect-dyed bayetta and synthetic dyed American flannel both of which can go back to 1860 although beyond that insect dyes generally are considered to date older. The Navajo use of expensive raveled yarns were replaced by homespun yarns once aniline red dye cakes and packets began to be available to the Navajo in the late 1870\'s/ early 1880\'s which marks the end of the Late Classic Period and is the beginning of the Transitional Period in Navajo textiles. The Pre-1875 era Chief\'s blankets have long been sought after as collectibles for use as wall art and recently made headlines again as a First Phase Chiefs Blanket sold at Moran\'s sale in 2012 for a record $1.8 million. While not as rare as a First or Second Phase Classic Chief\'s, Third Phase Chiefs have more design and this example has more colors than most Classic era Chief\'s blankets. Some of the finest examples of Third Phase Classic Chief\'s Blankets have sold for $100,000-$200,00 and up.

Condition: Can be displayed as is but value would be greatly increased by an investment in specialty cleaning of some staining that is more on one side than the other. (The $1.8 million sale record chief\'s blanket mentioned above was also stained but was successfully cleaned by a specialist so it may be advisable to use that specialist for cleaning this weaving) Please contact our gallery for condition report on this weaving, specialty cleaning referrals for this weaving and more information.

Provenance: From a California private estate collection. Gallery COA document included with purchase. Cleaning referral included.
