Rare Old UndatedEast GermanyOlympicCommittee Tier3 NOC Pin.Stick pin pin-back. About 28mm wide and 12mm high. This looks like it is pretty old; probably 1968. I thought it was Poland until another collector emailed me and identified it as East German.

NOC Pins-What is an NOC? A National Olympic Committee is the governing and coordinating Olympic organization within a specific nation. It works with the various national sports associations and federations, promotes the Olympic movement, fields national teams for regional and international competitions, and coordinates offers for candidate cities for future Games. Each committee is further associated with one of five continental Olympic Associations organized according to geographic location. The 200+ current NOCs are members of the IOC (International Olympic Committee).

Germany- German Democratic Republic-As Europe\'s largest economy and second most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent\'s economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the Eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The German Democratic Republic (GDR; German: Deutsche Demokratische Republik, DDR, or Ostdeutschland; known in English as East Germany). The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Germany is located in Central Europe. The land area is 349,223 square kilometers. In 2005 the population was 82,431,390.

Tiers-Many Eastern European nations have used a structured method to choose their Olympic teams. Tiers are actually levels of competition in the selection process. Selected athletes are invited to the 1st level of competition in a sport. The number of athletes are narrowed down in further competition until the actual Olympic Team is chosen. You could compare the method to MLB. A recruit might br drafted by a team. Then he might be promoted according to his success to B ball, A ball, AA ball, AAA ball, and finally to a major league team. The Olympic Tier pins produced by any nation are pretty rare because they were made for the participating athletes and few are available to the public at large.
