My father was a decorated US Army Air Corps pilot in WWII, flying the B-17 bomber. After he returned home, after being wounded while flying over New Guinea, he purchased his own plane. While I doubt that this parachute was his own military issue, it clearly was manufactured for use in WWII - he probably bought it surplus for his private plane, as he would have been familiar with its use. The B-8 parachute was developed by the Pioneer Parachute Company (and that company\'s name is labeled on the harness and pack tray with manufacturing dates of Dec 11 and Dec 19, 1943, respectively). The parachute itself (which is 24\' in diameter) remains as it was originally packed, but a peak inside suggests that the material is in pristine condition. According to the parachute packing log, the parachute was manufactured in Jan 1945 by National Automotive Fibres, Inc. This item is in stellar condition - no rips, tears or stains, pretty remarkable, given that it is 75 years old! Please let me know if you have any questions...would love this to go to a good home!
