DescriptionPlease super size additional photos below for best view of condition.On offer is a truly rare American Quaker school girl sampler that names the \"NORTH SCHOOL\", founded in 1799 adjacent to the Northern District Philadelphia Monthly Meeting (Society of Friends).The Daughters of the American Revolution website (DAR.org) showcases another example from the North School. (Please see their article \"Coming to America\", \"Quaker Samplers\"). Referring to their acquisition(Bequest of Ethel van Roden Price) of Mary P. Brooke\'s 1812 sampler naming the North School, the DAR writes:\"The arrival of this sampler resulted in an intensive search to pinpoint the North School and to identify the maker. A search of Quaker records by an independent researcher definitely identified a schoolhouse built in 1799 on a lot adjoining the Philadelphia Meeting for the Northern District.\" \"To date we have identified seven samplers made at the North School\".
The sampler on offer is highly visual, featuring a striking dark blue alphabet worked in the bold lettering style favored by Quaker schools, followed by about 12 lines of smaller alphabets, numbers and the remnants of several text lines at the bottom. Either the text was not finished or has worn away (or perhaps been \"picked\" with the intention of restitiching). The only words that I can decipher are \"Absent\" on the third line from the bottom and \"May P...\" on the line below.The needlework is enclosed on four sides by an iconic Quaker \"bellflower and vine\" border with an inverted bellflower top center between the words \"North\" and \"School\", all worked in the same deep blue as the large alphabet. Unsigned, except for the naming of the school, and undated, but certainly first quarter of the 19th century, it remains a highly visual and unmistakeable Quaker school girl sampler from a little known North Philadelphia school.Measuring about 13 1/2\" x 11 1/2\" viewing area and about 17 5/8\" x 15 5/8\" total. Framed and glazed in a lovely antique rosewood frame, ready to display.
