Staffordshire, England c. 1810

Thisis a rare diminutive adult size tea set in a vibrant puce (aka purple lavenderviolet ) against an earthenware (not porcelain) base finished with hand paintedcobalt blue outlining and pearlware glaze. The set features two primary scenesfrom rural life: a humble working farm family and a pipe smoking father withhis son leisurely playing with a hoop and stick. The lids show a man presentingfresh picked flowers to a girl.

Theform of the tea set is commonly associated with early earthenware setsdecorated with mother-child motifs in the style of Adam Buck but this set has more‘relevant’ scenes from country life and country courtship. We have been unableto identify the pattern name or exact maker although the seller attributed theset to Davenport. The set is unmarkedexcept for an impressed numeral 3 or 5 on the bottoms of the saucers. Based onthe form, especially the disproportionately large waste bowl, we would date theset to c1805-1815 from the Staffordshire region of England.
