Extremely Rare Inlaid Revolutionary War era Rifleman\'s Knife with case remnant. Wonderful example with solid unpitted blade, Ebony or Black Walnut haft with fancy pewter inlays. Heavy iron double diamond shaped guard. A perfect knife to display with Revolutionary War, War of 1812 Kentucky Rifles or a Civil War collection as this knife was very likely carried through that conflict as well. Several are pictured in the R.L Wilson book \"Steel Canvas\" and I have included a couple photos from the book of similar knives. Meant as a backup in close quarters fighting after the flintlock was discharged these knives were not much of a camp tool like the later Bowie knife and were designed for one thing only. Carried by most Rifleman of the day this example still has the original case (very rare for a knife of this age) and although the stitching and the very tip is gone the case still retains the the perfect fit to the blade that it spent 240+ years protecting. The knife measures about 13\" in overall length. The handle is about 1\" wide and oval in shape. The inlays are solid with no cracks or missing pieces and could be polished if desired but I prefer the patina of age. The handle looks to have had a shellac finish but most is gone.
