This could be even a Vesta box, a match safe or a gaming counter box. After long research we found objects of an almost same form and same decoration.

Your opinion is very welcome.

There are three sections with stamped mark JB and the London silver marks. The lids both with the address F. West Jamess Street 1 London.

The lids also stamped in the inside with a Queen Victoria cypher and a crown.

Fitzmaurice West is listed in 1841 as a cutler, dressingcase and needle manufacturer to Her Majesty Queen Victoria, HRH Prince Albert, to the Queen Dowager and to HRH the Duchess of Kent and other members of the Royal Family. Fitzmaurice West succeeded G. Palmer at 1, St Jamess Street in 1844. They moved to 2, St Jamess Street in 1877, and then to 9, King Street in 1883. Usually trading as F. West, the firm exhibited at the 1862 Exhibition.

a - Description:

A rare Victiorian silver guilloche box with screw caps to both sides.

b - Design:

Rare design in the form of a hollow cylinder completely decorated by guilloche.

Two lids, one with the only purpose to hide the silver marks that otherwise would interrupt the decoration.

So, strange enough, under one cover, which are both attached by screwing, you will find the solid base.

d - Year of production:

1874

e - Material and Technique:

Solid silver, decorated by guilloche, a technique in which a very precise, intricate and repetitive pattern is mechanically engraved into an underlying material via engine turning. A machine of the same name, also called a rose engine lathe, was used.

f - Dimensions and Weight: (All approx.)

Total height: 5 cm. = 1.97 inches.

Diameter at the outside 3 cm. = 1.8 inches.

Total weight: 50 gr.

Three sections with stamped mark JB into a rectangle and London silver marks.

To distinguish between John Batson or Jane Brownett is a task for the specialists. Both worked for the best retailers of Victorian London.

The lids both with the address F. West Jamess Street 1 London.

F. West was presumably the retailer.

The lids also stamped in the inside with a Queen Victoria cypher and a crown.
