Sinceretiring I find myself attending several local estate and farm sales per month, finding some of the most interesting, unusualandeven scarce finds in the back country of York and Lancaster Counties Pa. I believe thatmost oftenthe bestpickings are located in the most out of the way, obscure, small estate sales and sales where us locals are the lucky buyers, far from big cities and well known sale houses. Found recently at a Lancaster County Estate sale, I am offering this amazing English Arts & Crafts Coal Scuttle, Hod, Ash Receiver. This piece dates from the turn of the century and the maker is unknown, it is unmarked. This piece is more commonly seen in an all brass repousse, with only a few cropping up having been made with brass and copper. Such outstanding repousse detail of gorgeous full tailed peacocks perched on a fence on two sides with a lovely stylized Arts & Crafts inspired tree on the other two, handled sides. The top is adorned with an overstated brass knob with 4 spade shaped appendages attached by copper rivets to the lid. At each of the four corners of the lid, are peafowl chicks. Please view the photos and use the magnifying feature to study the craftsmanship of this piece, it\'s truly outstanding! It\'s inner ash bucket is no longer inside, it likely wore out from holding hot ash embers a long time ago. All four sides, top and bottom are sturdy with no metal wear to speak of. On the top there are 4 small marks that look like X crossed lines, they do not take away from it\'s breathtaking display, but need to be noted. Please look at them with the magnifying feature. I am not sure if they are damage or if they resulted from the repousse work, in order to dome the copper in making the lid design. It has the expected marks you would see on any metals work of this age, no dramatic dents or scratches, it\'s been well taken care of. I have not polished this or washed it in any way, you are seeing it as I received it and I merely wiped the dust off with a damp cloth. It measures 18\" tall to the knob, the top measurements are 15\" x 15\" square, graduating down to the bottom of the piece without adding the feet, it measures 11\" x 11\" square. This would look AH-mazing and be an enviable focus to the hearth of any Arts & Crafts designed room, and is quite a conversation piece!
