During World War Two, the Japanese took over the Philippine Islands (starting the day after the Pearl Harbor attack). Beginning with the capture of the Philippines, the Japanese military confiscated all hard currency, both on a federal and individual level, replacing it with locally printed notes bearing a proclamation of military issue. This currency up for sale was emergency currency made by the Philippine & U.S. Government when this event took place to protect the value of the original Philippine currency for citizen to be traded for full value if and when the Japanese invasion government left the territory. Anyone caught using this currency could face jail time and or be put to death depending how much value they were carrying or trading determined by the Japanese government at their discretion at the time of arrest.

The Philippine Commonwealth (by law: Commonwealth of the Philippines) was the name of the Philippines from 1935 to 1946 when it was still controlled by the United States. The Philippine Commonwealth was created by the Tydings-McDuffie Act, which was approved by the U.S. Congress in 1934. When Manuel L. Quezon became president in 1935, he was the first Filipino to head an elected government in the Philippines.
During its more than a decade of existence, the Commonwealth had a strong executive and a Supreme Court. Its legislature, dominated by the Nacionalista Party, was at first unicameral, but later bicameral. In 1937, the government selected Tagalog–the language of Manila and its surrounding provinces–as the basis of the national language, although it would be many years before its usage became general. Women\'s suffrage was adopted and the economy recovered to its pre-Depression level before the Japanese occupation in 1942.
The Commonwealth government went into exile from 1942 to 1945, when the Philippines was under Japanese occupation. In 1946, the Commonwealth ended and the Philippines reclaimed full sovereignty as provided for in Article XVIII of the 1935 Constitution.
